Methodological training „Qualitative Interviewing and Data Analysis Training Programme“

Level: Advanced

Training will be delivered by dr. Katy Wheeler and dr. Bethany Morgan Brett (University of Essex, United Kingdom).

The aim of this training is to develop your skills in qualitative interviewing and thematic qualitative data analysis using MAXQDA.

The interview is the most widely used qualitative research technique and this first session of this short course introduces you to key skills required to conduct a successful interview. There will be a practical exercise on designing a qualitative interview guide and you will be asked to conduct a short interview between the first and second sessions.

The second session focuses on qualitative data analysis and shows you how you can use computer software to help manage this process.  You will be sent a free trial of the software MAXQDA, which you are asked to download before the second session.

Day One

Date: 27th September 2021

Time: 13:00 and 16:30 Kaunas time

13.00-13.30: Introductions and welcome.

13.30-15.00: Lecture: How to do qualitative interviewing.

15.00-15.15: Break

15.15-16.30: Practical session: Developing your interview guide.

Homework: To conduct a 30- minute interview and transcribe the audio recording. Prepare to come to the following session with a digital file of the transcript.

Day Two

Date: 4th October 2021

Time: 13:00 and 16:30 Kaunas time

13.00-14.00: Lecture: How to analyse qualitative interview data.

14.00-15.00: Demonstration of MAXQDA package.

15.00-15.15: Break

15.15-16.30: Practical MAXQDA coding session using interview transcripts generated by the group.

Bethany Morgan Brett

Dr. Bethany Morgan Brett is a lecturer in Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies, a child therapist, and an organisational consultant. Her research has primarily focused on the themes of ageing, death, loss, grief, and the life course, and she has conducted extensive interviews and observations with vulnerable research populations. She is particularly interested in how psychoanalysis can be incorporated into social research methods. She has published a number of journal articles and is currently authoring her first monograph for Policy Press on the Death of Parents in Later Life.

Dr. Bethany Morgan Brett and Dr. Katy Wheeler have co-authored a textbook How to Do Qualitative Interviewing (to be published by SAGE in 2021).

Katy Wheeler

Dr. Katy Wheeler is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Essex. She has extensive experience of conducting qualitative interviews, including household interviews, expert interviews, and focus groups. Her research interests are in the fields of sustainability and consumption and she has published widely within leading academic journals and two books, Fair-Trade and the Citizen-Consumer: Shopping for Justice (Palgrave, 2012) and Recycling and Consumption Work: Social and moral economies (Palgrave, 2015). She is currently pursuing a project on sustainability education.

Dr. Katy Wheeler and Dr. Bethany Morgan Brett have co-authored a textbook How to Do Qualitative Interviewing (to be published by SAGE in 2021).
